Cardinals Monday minor league roster moves

Geoff Klein: Back to 2011's level

The St. Louis Cardinals made a series of changes to their minor league rosters on Monday with more to come.

With the activation of David Freese by the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, a series of roster moves down the system was almost sure to follow. The first was the expected return of infielder Ryan Jackson to Memphis from St. Louis. Both of those moves were announced earlier in the day.

Over the course of Monday afternoon, other organizational moves will come to light. This thread will be updated as that news is known. The first moves have affected Peoria.

Peoria Chiefs

The single-A club received catcher/first baseman Geoff Klein from A-Advanced Palm Beach. In the related move, first baseman David Washington was placed on Peoria's Suspended List. The reason for the disciplinary action against Washington was not announced.

Update: Manager Dann Bilardello told the Peoria Journal-Star the suspension is "for personal reasons and indefinitely." The paper later added that Washington was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with aggravated battery on police, criminal trespassing and obstructing an officer.

With Palm Beach, Klein had one walk and scored twice in just one official at-bat. The 25-year-old last played in the Midwest League in 2011, having spent all of last season in the Florida State League. Klein then played winter ball in Australia.

Washington was one of the organization's top hitters during spring training and was making the step to full-season ball from short-season Class-A Batavia last summer. The 22-year-old was 3-for-9 including two doubles and six walks on the young season. The left-handed hitter scored once and drove in one.

Memphis Redbirds

While Jackson has been optioned to Memphis, he has not yet been activated by the Triple-A club. A corresponding transaction may not be announced until Tuesday.

The Redbirds remain a player short as outfielder Oscar Taveras, away from the club for a family matter, is not in Monday's lineup. The outfielders are Chad Huffman, Justin Christian and Jamie Romak. Vance Albitz is playing shortstop.

Springfield and Palm Beach

The Double-A Cardinals made no roster moves on Monday and the A-Advanced Cardinals have the day off.
