2012 TigsTools: Best Command
Best Command 1. Josh Turley (LHP) 2. Hudson Randall (RHP) 3. Tommy Collier (RHP) 4. Jordan John (LHP) 5. Kyle Ryan (LHP) Turley impressed a lot during the NYPL season. He throws consistent strikes with all of his pitches and also shows the ability to locate the ball extremely well throughout the strike zone. He has good feel for moving the ball from side to side and even showed an ability to elevate when he needed to. His control profile is exceptional and he also should have excellent command. Hudson Randall and Jordan John are two polished college pitchers that throw lots of strikes and have occasional stretches of good command over their arsenals. Both pitchers can do good things with their fastballs and just need to refine the ability to locate all of their pitches to move up this list. Tommy Collier is one of the best pure strike throwers in the Tigers system and his rotation-mate in West Michigan, Kyle Ryan, showed some of the same ability as well. Both project for better command thanks to their athleticism, clean deliveries and current control profiles. Honorable Mention Will Clinard (RHP) Matt Davenport (RHP) Two more 2012 draft choices were close to making this list and could sneak in there next year. Will Clinard throws a lot of strikes but needs to improve his location within the strike zone. Davenport throws a ton of strikes from his side-arm slot but struggles to consistently locate the ball to his glove side. Projection Kings Endrys Briceno (RHP) Jake Thompson (RHP) Having watched numerous bullpen sessions with Briceno last year, his command profile is outstanding. He shows the ability to move the ball from spot to spot with ease and simply needs to develop a consistent ability to translate that command potential to game situations. Jake Thompson has command projection and just needs innings and physical development to put that skill on display. Others Considered Tyler Clark (RHP) Jeff Ferrell (RHP) Wilsen Palacios (RHP) Brennan Smith (RHP) Slade Smith (RHP) Jade Todd (RHP) Tyler Clark pounds the zone with fringy stuff and shows an ability to locate his fastball when he has his funky delivery in order. Jeff Ferrell began showing the ability to locate his stuff late in the year as he came back from injury. Brennan Smith, Slade Smith and Jade Todd all have stretches where the locate to quadrants but lack refined command.
