Salas among 5 Cards in World Baseball Classic

Team Mexico has a St. Louis Cardinals pitcher, but it is not Jaime Garcia as expected.

On Thursday, rosters for the 2013 World Baseball Classic were announced. Five St. Louis Cardinals are participating, four of whom are major leaguers.

Previously announced were outfielder Carlos Beltran and catcher Yadier Molina of Puerto Rico. The two also played in the 2009 WBC under then-manager Jose Oquendo, who is not participating in 2013.

New names disclosed Thursday are all right-handed pitchers - Mitchell Boggs (USA), Fernando Salas (Mexico) and Double-A Springfield's Richard Castillo (Spain). Salas has pitched for his home country in prior international competitions.

In addition, Jaime Garcia had been pre-announced as a member of Team Mexico, but is not on the club's current roster. The left-handed pitcher exited the 2012 playoffs early due to shoulder problems.

The 16-team tournament, consisting of three rounds, will run from March 2-19. The Cardinals will officially open their 2013 spring training schedule on February 23, but will not face any of the WBC teams in exhibitions this year.

Full schedules and rosters can be found on the World Baseball Classic website.
