Winter Leagues Week in Review
Kai Gronauer: 4-for-12, 3 RBI, R, 2B, BB
Gronauer is sticking to his three games per week, but looks like he is starting to find something of a rhythm in the AFL. He is 4-for-16 with three RBI over his last four games. That does not sound like much but Gronauer had just one hit in his first 22 at-bats in Arizona.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis: 6-for-24, HR, 2 RBI, 4 R, 2B, 3 BB, SB
Nieuwenhuis had an up-and-down week, but one that started on a high note when he went 4-for-8 with his first fall league home run, two RBI and three runs scored combined on Monday and Tuesday. He went just 2-for-16 over his last four games of the week. To date, he is hitting .272 with one home run, 12 RBI and a 23/9 K/BB ratio in the AFL.
Josh Satin: 5-for-15, R, 2 BB
Satin's 3-for-5, HR, 5 RBI performance on November 5 got him bumped from the taxi squad to the regular roster. He responded with a solid though statistically unassuming week. In 10 games, Satin is hitting .417 (15-for-36) with one home run, six RBI and a .500 OBP.
Jordany Valdespin: 0-for-2
Valdespin tallied just two at-bats this week before going down with a forearm injury that has removed him from the Solar Sox roster. In all likelihood, his AFL stint is over. However, he exits after a very fine performance that saw him hit .355 (27-for-76) with one home run, 11 RBI, seven steals and a .388 OBP in 19 games.
Nick Carr: 2 G, 3.1 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 3 BB
Carr's outings swung in to dramatically different directions last week. He pitched two shutout innings, giving up hits, strikeout three with one walk on Monday. He returned on Thursday and gave up three earned runs on two hits and two walks with strikeout in 1 1/3 innings. Carr has given up nine earned runs on 15 hits with a 9/11 K/BB ratio in 14.1 innings this fall.
Brad Holt: DNP
Holt was scratched from the Rising Stars Game that took place eight days ago and grumblings are that Holt has been scratched from the Solar Sox roster for the remainder of the season. If so, he will end his AFL performance with a 2-1 record and 2.92 ERA in 12 1/3 innings with a 13/9 K/BB ratio.
Robert Carson: 2 GS, Loss, 6 IP, 6 ER, 11 H, 4 K, 2 BB
Carson's tumultuous AFL season continued with a rough outing on Monday and an improved showing on Thursday. In his first start, Carson allowed five earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk in three innings. In his second start, he gave up one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk in three innings.
Eric Niesen: 2 G, 1.2 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, BB
Niesen, who is pitching in short relief, gave up three earned runs on three hits, including a home run, with one walk on Monday. He next pitched on Thursday and pitched a perfect inning. Niesen had tossed four consecutive scoreless innings before Monday's outing. Overall, he has surrendered seven earned runs on 17 hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in 10 1/3 innings. The opposition is hitting .333 off him.
Dominican Winter League
Daniel Murphy: 11-for-30, HR, 5 RBI, 3 R, 3B, BB, SB
Murphy's strong winter league season continued last week. Murphy rides a 7-game hitting streak entering Sunday. His best game last week came on Monday when he went 4-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Overall, Murphy is hitting .297 (22-for-74) with two home runs, 12 RBI, five runs scored and five doubles in 20 games. He has struck out just six times.
Francisco Pena: 4-for-23, RBI, R, SB
Pena has struggled to find a rhythm so far this fall. Pena started his DWL stint by going 1-for-11 before recording just four singles since.
Jeurys Familia: DNP
Familia pitched one inning of relief on October 26 and has not returned to the mound since. No news has come out, that I've seen, which has indicated an injury for Familia.
Armando Rodriguez: 2 G, 1.1 IP, ER, 4 H, 3 K, BB
Rodriguez made his third and fourth outings of the DWL season. He gave up two hits and struck out one in 0.1 innings a week ago. He next pitched on Thursday and gave up one earned on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk in one inning. He has struck out six and walked one in 3.1 innings of work in the DWL.
Puerto Rico Winter League
Jose De La Torre: 1.2 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, BB
De La Torre had a rough time in his one outing last week. To date, he has allowed three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in 8 1/3 innings of work. He boasts a 2/1 ground ball/fly ball ratio and a .214 opponent's average.
Venezuelan Winter League
Eric Campbell: 1-for-12, RBI, R, 3 BB
After a hot start, Campbell has cooled significantly over his last 10 games. He went 4-for-29 in that span with two RBI and just one extra base hit. He is slugging only .284 (six doubles, no home runs) in 25 games.
Manuel Alvarez: 0.2 IP, ER, H
Alvarez, the newly minted member of the 40-man roster, got just 0.2 innings of work last week. In nine games this fall, he has allowed four earned runs on 13 hits in 13.1 innings with nine strikeouts and four walks.
