| Biography: |
| The Mets drafted second baseman Daniel Garcia out of Pepperdine University on the 5th round of the June 2001 free agent draft. Garcia converted from center field to second in the 2000 Alaska Summer Baseball League because he doesn't project to have enough power to be a starting outfielder. He already is a very solid defensive player despite limited experience. Garcia is an advanced player who could move quickly through the system. He's has a couple of years of experience with the wooden bat in summer leagues. Garcia is in many ways similar to Chris Basak -- the Mets 6th round selection in the 2000 draft, but is a limit advanced and athletic. Garcia is an accomplished bunter, hit and runs well, runs the bases well, can steal a base, and will break up double plays. He will draw enough walks to be a prototypical #2 hitter. As Garcia is projected to play for St. Lucie in 2002, he should not have as much trouble adjusting as Basak did, because he's more experienced with awooden bat and has more power than Basak. |
