| Biography: |
Jason Phillips was Mets' 24th round selection in the June 1997 free agent draft. Phillips played college baseball for San Diego State University. Phillips, an outstanding defensive catcher, gave Piazza a tip that improved Piazza's throwing to second base.
Phillips has shown good K:BB ratio throughout his minor league career. A 2:1 ratio is considered good. Phillips' career ratio of 169:142, a roughly 1.2 K per BB is outstanding. Despite the good plate discipline an adequate power, the question with Phillips has always been whether he would hit enough to be more than a back up catcher at the major league level. During the late 2000 season, Phillips began to do a better job of driving the ball to all fields. (Driving the ball to all fields appears to have been a point of emphasis by Mets minor league hitting instructors in 2001.)
