| Biography: |
Nick Maness was selected in the 10th round of the 1997 draft. In high school, Maness was a highly regarded wide receiver and ran cross-country. However, Maness was a less successful cross-country runner judging by his performance at a meet in Rhode Island.
Maness after struggling with his command and control of his emotions had a breakthrough season in 2000 at St. Lucie. Maness had previously been issuing about 4.5 walks per 9 innings and last season it was 4.2 walks per 9 innings a slight drop. But, Maness added an excellent power curve ball to his quality fastball and change up.
In 2001, Maness has once again struggled with his command of his repetoire. His has bouts of wildness especially early in starts where he simply walks batters and gives up hits with runners on base. Maness' command problems are best illustrated by his walking the lead off hitter in 6 of his 7 starts in the Arizona Fall League. So Maness continues to have stretches where he loses command of his fastball and does not consistently throw his curve ball for strikes. Maness dwells on poor outings and occasionally allows it affects his next start or appearance.
Maness' fastball has not been consistently in the 91-93 mph range in 2001 as was the case in 2000. The Mets feel that Maness may be pitching with a tired arm. Maness pitched 155 combined innings at Binghamton and St. Lucie and another 33 innings in the Arizona Fall League. Since Maness pitched a combined 216 innings the three previous seasons, there may be some merit to the belief that Maness has a tired arm. |
