| Biography: |
A 16 year veteran in MLB, Sammy Sosa made his major league debut on June 16, 1989 against the New York Yankees and pitcher Andy Hawkins. Sosa's first career homerun came five days later on June 21 at Fenway Park against Roger Clemens and the Boston Red Sox.
On March 30, 1992, Sosa was traded by the Chicago White Sox to the crosstown Cubs for OF George Bell and RP Ken Patterson.
Sosa became the first Cubs hitter to record 30 or more homers and stolen bases in a single season, in 1993.
Sosa won National League MVP honors in 1998 by leading the Cubs to the playoffs with 66 homeruns, breaking the all-time mark set by Roger Maris in 1963.
