| Originally signed by the Yankees as a free agent in 1990, Rivera debuted in 1995 as a starter for the Yankees, compiling an unimpressive 5.51 ERA in 19 appearances including 10 starts... Rivera was moved to the bullpen where he excelled as John Wetteland's setup man in 1996, helping the Yankees to a World Series win... Rivera inherited the closer role in 1997 and since has become one of the most feared closers of all time... The Panama native has 283 career saves, most ever by a Yankee, and a career ERA of 2.49... He won the AL Rolaids Relief award in 1999 and again in 2001 and also won the World Series MVP award in '99 when he saved two games and won another... Is generally regarded as the best postseason relief pitcher of all time, compiling a 7-1 record and 30 saves with a miniscule 0.75 ERA... |
