| Matsui, a three-time Japanese Central League MVP with the Yomiuri Giants, came to the major leagues in the 2003 season, signing a three-year deal with the Yankees... Known for his enormous power in Japan (where he hit 50 homeruns in 2002), Matsui was nicknamed "Godzilla"... Hit .287 with 106 RBi and 16 homeruns in his first season in the MLB, playing in all 163 of the Yankees' games and finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting to KC's Angel Berroa... Hit a Grand Slam in his first at bat at Yankee Stadium. |
