Kyle Allen is already on the disabled list with a back injury. The injury, it turns out, is a cracked vertebrae which has been the cause for him pitching through pain throughout at least the last four weeks. There may have been some early signs before that.

Regardless, he's shut down. He can still work out but he will be down for at least 6-8 weeks. Ideally, the injury heals without issue and he can get ready for the season. The possible down side, the injury takes longer to heal and he starts in Extended Spring Training.

It at least a partial reason for why he has been so inconsistent over the last two months if not the whole season. There's been a drop in velocity in his fastball and his pitches have flattened out. A contact I know who saw him in Tampa in his last start noticed Allen was off not only with his pitches but noticed Allen pitching hurt.

It's definitely a tough end result to a frustrating year for Allen who was most likely to start next season in St. Lucie anyways. Hopefully it all goes well because Allen remains one of the high-upside projection guys at the lower levels.
