As the calendar flips to May, find out who came up with the big starts in Buffalo. Who carried the big sticks in St. Lucie and who got red hot down in Savannah? Learn the answers to those questions and more in this edition of Week in Review.

Buffalo (AAA):
Last Week: 1-5

The tough season continues for the organization’s Triple-A affiliate. The Bisons were swept by the Syracuse Chiefs by a combined 17-6 score. They followed that up by losing the one game in a rain-shortened two-game set with the Rochester Red Wings (behind former farm hand Kevin Mulvey) before capturing one win in the first three games against the Louisville Bats. Heading into Sunday, the Bisons are now 3-18 on the season.

Fernando Martinez: 5-for-20, HR, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, 2B

Fernando went into a vicious slump to end April, finishing the month with a .233 average. However, he came out of the gate in May with two slump-busting performances in which he cracked his second home run of the season. His two multi-hit games over the weekend pushed his on-base percentage back over .300 (.311 into Sunday). His nine doubles are still tied for the International League lead.

Jonathon Niese: ND, 6 IP, ER, 3 H, 8 K, BB

The left-hander did not have a pleasant April as he went 0-2 with an 8.44 ERA, averaging four innings per start and allowing the opposition to hit .361 off him. But like Martinez, the flip of the calendar clicked with Niese who dominated Louisville for his best start of the season. The eight strikeouts were a season-high and left-handers are hitting .222 off Niese to date.
Dillon Gee: 1-1, 11 IP, 5 ER, 15 H, 6 K, 2 BB

It must be something about the new month because Gee too registered his best start of the season, leading the Bisons to their lone victory of the week as he shut down Louisville. The seven innings were a season-high for Gee whose 27 innings leads the club. He began the week with a more up and down start as he gave up four earned runs over five innings with five strikeouts against Syracuse.

BINGHAMTON (AA):
Last Week: 3-3

The B-Mets even week, which included splitting six games with New Hampshire, leaves them at 11-9 heading into Sunday and just one game back behind the FisherCats. The B-Mets received fairly equal hitting and pitching for the week prior to Saturday’s 14-4 loss at home to New Hampshire. Recent shifts in the organization have brought infielder Jonathan Malo back to Binghamton.

Lucas Duda: 8-for-23, 5 RBI, 5 R, 2B, 3 BB, SB

The first baseman’s big week, which included three multi-hit games, pushed his average back over .300 (.304). He recorded his second double of the season, but his slugging percentage (.429) still remains well below his on-base percentage (.467). His 16 walks are tied for second in the Eastern League and his on-base percentage ties him with Thole for third in the league. He is still just 1-for-17 against left-handed pitching.

Josh Thole: 6-for-18, RBI, 2 R, 3 2B, 6 BB

The B-Mets catcher still has not provided much in the way of production, but he continues to get on base at a very high rate. His .371 average (entering Sunday) was good for second in the Eastern League and his on-base percentage was already touched upon. He has four multi-hit games in his last nine and is hitting a robust .500 (10-for-20) against left-handed pitching on the season.

Ryan Coultas: Win, 5 IP, ER, 6 H, 4 K, BB

Coultas picked up his first career victory as a starter in his fourth outing of the season. Coultas limited the Portland Sea Dogs to just one earned run, the second time in three outings he has stymied the opposition. He has not given up more than three runs in any of his starts this season. To date, he has allowed 21 hits in 20 2/3 innings pitched.

ST. LUCIE (A+):
Last Week: 5-2

The Mets bounced back in a big way last week after dropping their first two games, the series finale to the Charlotte Stone Crabs and the opener to the Jupiter Hammerheads. They then went on to win five in a row including the first three in a four-game set against the Sarasota Reds. The Mets are now 12-10 on the season and are tied for third place in the Florida State League South Division entering Sunday.

Ike Davis: 10-for-29, HR, 2 RBI, 5 R, 3 2B, 3 BB

The long wait is over. After nearly 300 professional at-bats, Ike Davis slugged his first professional home run on Tuesday at home against Jupiter. That solo shot sparked the first baseman to a big week as he went on to stretch a seven-game hitting streak entering Sunday which included a 3-for-6 effort on Wednesday. He is hitting .306 over his last ten games and is now hitting .295 for the season. He is currently hitting .318 against right-handed pitching and .227 against southpaws.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis: 10-for-32, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 7 R, 4 2B, BB, 2 SB

The St. Lucie centerfielder also showed off his power this week, cracking his second and third home runs of the season, four of his six total doubles and four multi-hit games—three in a row from Thursday to Saturday. The 2008 3rd round pick, who boasts excellent speed, stole his first bases of the season. Nieuwenhuis is hitting .290 at Tradition Field, but just .167 (4-for-24) on the road.

Jenrry Mejia: 1-0, 13 IP, 8 H, 11 K, BB

The 19-year-old right-hander was downright dominant in his two starts last week. He picked up a no-decision in the Mets 2-1 loss last Monday though he tossed five shutout innings and gave up five hits and zero walks. He returned to the mound on Saturday and tossed a season-high eight innings and tied a season-high with six strikeouts. His 25 strikeouts were tied for fifth in the Florida State League entering Sunday.

SAVANNAH (A-):
Last Week: 3-4

It was really a tale of two halves of the week for the Sand Gnats who dropped their first games including the last two in a series against the Charleston RiverDogs and the opener against the Greenville Drive. They rebounded by taking the remaining three games of the series against Greenville before dropping the opener against the Asheville Tourists. At 13-10 entering Sunday, the Gnats are one game back of first place in the Sally League Southern Division.

Sean Ratliff: 13-for-29, HR, 3 RBI, 8 R, 5 2B, BB, SB

The second-year outfielder had a monster week in which he registered two 4-hit games and smacked his second home run of the season. His best night of the week came on Saturday when he went 4-for-4 with three doubles. His eight doubles on the season are tied for sixth in league and his 31 hits overall are tied for fourth.

Eric Campbell: 9-for-27, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, 2B, 3 BB, SB

Campbell had a very solid week all around which included his second and third home runs of the season. His 16 RBI on the season rank him 7th in the league. He is hitting .314 over his last ten games and hitting .353 against left-handed pitchers on the season.

Robert Carson: Win, 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 R, 7 K, 2 BB

The left-hander picked up his second victory of the season by keeping Greenville at bay over six innings. Two unearned runs crossed the plate, but Carson held on by allowing just three hits and striking out a season-high seven. Though he walked two batters on Wednesday, he has issued just three free passes over 20 2/3 innings on the year.
