Top 20 Prospects 20 and Under – Part I
20. Javier Rodriguez, 18 – 2008 GCL: 38 G, 135 AB, .193, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 27 K, 10 BB, .258 OBP The 2008 2nd round pick had a disappointing debut and there are mixed feelings about how his game will develop in coming years. Rodriguez' bat was the favorable aspect when drafted, but the low batting average and fairly undeveloped swing do not bode well looking forward. However, given his age, we will give him some leeway as he heads into his second season. Once originally thought to be a fast riser like others forthcoming on this list, Rodriguez will need a strong season to dissuade naysayers. 19. Giovanni Ortiz, 20 – 2008 GCL: 15 G, 40 AB, .350, 3 RBI, 10 K, 4 BB, .447 OBP The big, and I do mean big, first baseman debuted in the Gulf Coast League last season and demonstrated solid skills at the plate. At 6-foot-5 and over 235 pounds, Ortiz generates a lot of power when going right, but he still has steps to take to stabilize his swing. His power potential makes him an enticing...
