OF, Bobby Malek

The Mets used their 4th round selection in the 2002 draft to take Bob Malek despite knowing that the two-All American had torn a ligament in his right elbow. Malek became the first Michigan State Spartan position player to be tabbed an All-American since Kirk Gibson. Malek earned freshman All-American from Collegiate Baseball and Louisville Slugger. Malek, who hails from Detroit, earned player of the year honors from the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News.

At MSU, Malek hit 82 extra-base hits in 625 at bats. Bob Malek unsuccessfully attempted to play through the pain of torn ligaments in his elbow, but after struggling through 28 games. Malek called it quits and had surgery performed on his elbow. In his struggles, Malek demonstrated very little power or plate discipline. He did successfully steal 4 bases in 4 attempts...
