Final 2002 Scouting Report: SS, Rob McIntyre
After having solid seasons at Gulfport in 1999 and Kingsport in 2000, McIntyre struggled at short-season A level baseball. He struggled hitting breaking pitches. He continues to demonstrate increased power, but his K-rate and BB-rate have suffered badly. For a middle infielder, McIntyre has demonstrated solid power with slugging percentages of .437, .352 and .359. Despite struggling making contact in 2001 at Brooklyn, Robert McIntyre played one level up at A -Capital City in 2002 and responded pretty well, showing the promise he displayed in 2000 at Kingsport. McIntyre hit for a much better average (.252), but still struck out way too much (102 K's in 345 at-bats). He has struck out 253 times in just 893 career at-bats (about one strike out per 3.5 at-bats), and has just 66 walks in his minor league career thus far! To improve, McIntyre must show much more discipline at the plate and be more selective when trying to drive the baseball. Year Team AVG. Batting and Power. McIntyre is just beginning to develop his power potential, he will hit for additional power as he physically develops a bit more. McIntyre struggled at Brooklyn and had trouble hitting breaking pitchers. Base Running and Speed. McIntyre has great speed, but he is neither a good base runner nor a good base stealer. Defense. McIntyre plays excellent defense at both shortstop and second base. He's a bit error-prone which is not unusual for a player his age. However, his being a bit of a hot dog contributes to his errors. He'll need to cut down on the 30 errors he had in 2002. Projection. N/A. It's a little to early to project how well he will eventually hit. His defense and power will get him only so far. ETA. N/A. The Mets have developed good depth and the Mets have 2 solid shortstop prospects in front of him in Jose Reyes and Chris Basak. Shortstops Team Chris Basak AAA - Norfolk Tides Jose Reyes AA - Binghamton Mets Enrique Cruz A - St. Lucie Mets Robert McIntyre A - Capital City Bombers Corey Ragsdale A - Brooklyn Cyclones COMMENTS The hyping, and, perhaps, over hyping of Reyes has begun before he even reaches MLB. NYC can be a tough place for a potential star or superstar to break into MLB. The good news is that he's replacing Rey Ordonez, so it shouldn't be like Mickey Mantle replacing Joltin Joe DiMaggio. As a hitter, Reyes doesn't really compare to any of the top middle infielders. But, the Soriano comparison is best only because Soriano is a wrist hitter who generates his power primarily through his hands, wrists and forearms as does Reyes. Both also have tremendous speed. Beyond that Reyes won't hit for the power Soriano will, and Reyes will have a much better OBP. 1. Since Marco Scutaro turns 27 in October, he can't be considered more than a good bench player. 2. Chris Basak, a very good defensive SS, has struggled at AA. 3. Rob McIntyre has power and is a good defensive prospect, but has poor plate discipline. He continues to struggle against the CB. 4. Should the Mets leave Enrique Cruz at SS, then he becomes the Mets second best SS prospect. 5. The athletic Corey Ragsdale possess 20 HR+ and 20 SB+ potential. His good hands ensures that Ragsdale will become a very good defensive SS. His long swing needs modification if he is to develop into a solid hitter. Do you have an opinion on the Mets?
