The Mets used a supplemental 1st round pick in the June 2001 free agent draft to select David Wright. Wright is from Chesapeake Virginia -- a stone's throw from Norfolk where the Mets' AAA team plays. Wright is a life-long Mets fan. Going into the draft, Wright was rated as a late 2nd or early 3rd round selection because he lacks exceptional athleticism and didn't project (for some scouts) to be a 30 home run hitter.

Wright had a fine season at Columbia with an OPS of 768. He had 43 extra-base hits including 30 doubles. The ratios are extraordinary: 1.5 BB per 10 AB, K:BB ratio of 1.50. He successfully stole 21 bases in 26 attempts a 82% success rate. Wright is simply a mature, hard-nosed, hard-working ball player. Wright struggled after Justin Huber was promoted to St. Lucie...
