Martinez Placed on Disabled List

The 18-year-old outfielder's efficient play has been a boost to the Binghamton Mets. Here is an update on the condition of one of the brightest stars in the system.

Fernando Martinez returned to the Binghamton Mets clubhouse Tuesday night from New York City, where he was visiting doctors regarding his right hand.

On Wednesday Martinez was placed on the disabled list, officially listed with a right hand contusion. Jamar Hill was called up from St. Lucie.

"It's the same problem that I've had for a couple weeks," Martinez said Tuesday. "I think right now I won't play for three weeks. I don't know what it is exactly, I don't know what happened but I can't swing the bat right now."

In 60 games so far this season, Martinez hit .271 with four home runs and 21 RBI with a .336 on-base percentage.

The injury has been evident in his recent play. In his last 10 games, he hit .227 with one home run and four RBI with nine strikeouts.

As of now, Martinez will be scratched from the MLB Futures Game, part of the MLB All-Star Weekend, on July 8.
