He took the loss in his professional debut, allowing two runs in an inning of work on June 21 against Staten Island, but after that, it was lights out. "I think it just took me a couple of games to get used to that type of atmosphere," Smith said. "When I first came in, I didn't have my same confidence from college. I was like, 'Oh, man, do I really belong out here?' But once I figured it out, it's just baseball out there. I went out and threw, and my confidence from school came right back." Smith did not allow a run over his remaining 16 appearances with the Cyclones, racking up nine saves and striking out 28 batters in 20 innings.
