Left-hander Tom Glavine returns to the rotation Friday at Houston, his first start since Aug. 16. After that game in Philadelphia, he complained of coldness and numbness in his left middle finger.

An angiogram alleviated the worst-case scenario of a blood clot in his shoulder and possible season-ending surgery.

Glavine is being treated with blood thinners.

"I can't say I'm totally without concerns, but I'm not expecting to have any problems," Glavine said of his comeback. "But, if I do, I can't say I would be totally surprised."

Glavine said his biggest worry is being too strong. He hasn't pitched in two weeks, which he said impacts the location of his fastball and the sharpness of his breaking pitches.

REPLAY: Left-handed reclamation project Oliver Perez made his second start with the Mets on Thursday at Colorado, and he gave up seven runs on 12 hits in three innings of an 8-4 loss to the Rockies.

Apparently, there is more work that needs to be done.

The Mets like Perez's potential because he's a lefty who throws hard. They figure he will compete for a rotation spot next spring.

NOTES, QUOTES

  • CF Carlos Beltran was booed last year when he returned to Houston for the first time with the Mets and wouldn't be surprised if he gets the same reception this weekend. "We'll see when I get there," he said. "They can do what they want." Beltran left the Astros after the 2004 postseason, in which he hit eight homers, to sign with the Mets. "I believe I made the right decision," Beltran said.

  • RHP Orlando Hernandez, who has been shut down since Aug. 25 because of a tired arm, is expected to rejoin the rotation Sunday in Houston. RHP Steve Trachsel and LHP David Williams will follow in the first two games of next week's series with Atlanta. Hernandez underwent shoulder surgery in 2003, and he went on the disabled list once in 2004 and twice last year with shoulder problems. Hernandez has made 24 starts this season, his highest total since he made 29 for the Yankees in 2000.

  • RHP Pedro Martinez is tentatively scheduled to throw off the mound Saturday in Florida. After that, the Mets can possibly start the clock on his return. Martinez is on the disabled list with a strained right calf. Manager Willie Randolph said he's hoping to get three or four starts from Martinez before the playoffs.

  • INF Anderson Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. The Mets' 25-man roster has a breakdown of 15 position players and 10 pitchers, and bringing up Hernandez gives them the flexibility of carrying that split on the postseason roster.

  • LF Cliff Floyd received treatment on his Achilles tendon in Florida and will resume his rehab game schedule Friday. He is not expected to be recalled until after the weekend.

  • RHP Heath Bell and LHP Royce Ring are expected to be brought up from Triple-A Norfolk within the next few days. After them, when the minor league season ends Sept. 4, RHP Brian Bannister, RHP Mike Pelfrey and LHP Dave Williams are expected to be brought up. Williams was optioned to Norfolk on Thursday.

  • The Mets' streak of errorless games ended at 12 when they committed one error in Thursday night's loss at Colorado. In addition, CF Carlos Beltran's streak of scoring in 12 consecutive games was snapped.

BY THE NUMBERS: 10 -- Games the Mets will play against the Phillies in August.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He's a good player and a good person. You'll find that out." --1B Carlos Delgado, speaking to reporters about RF Shawn Green, who was acquired this week from Arizona. Delgado and Green are close friends stemming from their days as teammates in Toronto.
