After beating Cincinnati 6-2 Thursday to conclude their homestand, the Mets resume interleague play Friday when they start a three-game series at Toronto. Then it's off for three at Boston and three at Yankee Stadium, in what is arguably the Mets' biggest test of the season.

"It seems that I always say this is a test for us, but these games are important," said third baseman David Wright, who homered twice Thursday.

"It's important that we play well on the road against good teams."

The Mets begin this nine-game road trip with a 10-game lead over the Phillies, who were idle Thursday.

Despite the team's bulge in the National League East, manager Willie Randolph isn't satisfied.

"I wish it were 14 or 15, as far as I'm concerned," Randolph said.

REPLAY: David Wright, the leading vote-getter among National League third basemen for the All-Star Game, showed why Thursday by clubbing a pair of two-run home runs to help the Mets beat the Reds 6-2. The teams split their four-game series.

Wright's support enabled Pedro Martinez to pick up his seventh victory of the season. An impressed Martinez gushed over Wright after the game, calling him the team's MVP so far.

NOTES, QUOTES

  • LF Cliff Floyd was eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday, but he is still at the Mets' spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla., rehabbing his sprained left ankle. Floyd has not played since he was injured June 6 while running the bases at Los Angeles. The Mets haven't discounted Floyd being activated this weekend when the team is in Toronto.

  • 1B Carlos Delgado said it would be emotional when he returns to Toronto on Friday with the Mets. Delgado kept a lot of memories from playing with Blue Jays. What he didn't keep was his house. "It's a cool place to play, but it's way too cold to live there," Delgado said. "Hey man, the winters there are freezing cold."

  • LHP Tom Glavine will be seeking his 11th victory of the season Friday in the third visit of his career to Toronto. His first one came in Game 4 of the 1992 World Series.

  • SS Jose Reyes went 2-for-4 Thursday to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Reyes has hit safely in all but one game in which he has played in June. He's hitting .387 with a .452 on-base percentage this month, raising his overall average 33 points to .283.

  • 3B David Wright hit a pair of two-run homers Thursday, giving him 17 for the year with 60 RBIs. Wright has nine homers and 25 RBIs this month.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's in real good hands, obviously. Those kids are playing their butts off for us. Carlos (Beltran) is having a nice year, but to watch David and Jose blossom right in front of your eyes, it's really special to see. And they're going to get even better, which is nice to know also. Jose is in a nice rhythm; he's hitting the crap out of the ball, and David has been getting big hits." -- Manager Willie Randolph, on the tandem of Jose Reyes and David Wright.
