Down on the Farm: Ruckle fine for St. Lucie

Down on the Farm for May 20: Chris Basak comes up with the game-winning hit to lift Norfolk ... Binghamton suspended due to rain ... Jacob Ruckle pitches seven shutout innings in St. Lucie's win ... Jonathon Niese improves to 6-1 for Hagerstown.

Norfolk Tides
Triple-A International League

Chris Basak's single scored Victor Diaz in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Norfolk Tides edged the Toledo Mud Hens Friday, 3-2.

Facing Chris Spurling (0-1), Diaz reached on an error by shortstop Don Kelly, then moved to second on Anderson Hernandez's sacrifice bunt. Basak's hit made a winner of right-hander Steve Schmoll (1-1), who pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief.

Notes: Evan MacLane started for Norfolk and allowed two runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings, including a home run. He walked three and struck out three, taking his first no-decision since moving to Triple-A. … Jose Offerman went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Tides.


Binghamton Mets
Double-A Eastern League

Tuesday's game between the Binghamton Mets and the Altoona Curve was suspended due to rain.

The game will resume at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, with Binghamton leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. The B-Mets had two runners on base and two outs at the time of the suspension.


St. Lucie Mets
Single-A Florida State League

Jacob Ruckle pitched seven shutout innings and Jesus Flores homered, driving in three runs as the St. Lucie Mets blasted past the Fort Myers Miracle Friday, 7-0.

Flores cracked a two-run shot, his fifth, facing Fort Myers starter Colby Miller in the fourth inning. The Mets coasted behind Ruckle (1-2), who scattered seven hits and walked none, striking out four to earn his first victory of the season.

Notes: Josh Petersen also homered for the Mets, hitting his fourth long ball of the year. He was 2-for-5 and scored twice. … Travis Hope pitched two innings of scoreless relief. … Enrique Cruz had three hits and a run scored as St. Lucie's designated hitter.


Hagerstown Suns
Single-A South Atlantic League

Jonathon Niese struck out seven batters in five innings and the Hagerstown Suns got to starter Josh Outman for five runs, leading the way to a victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws Friday, 8-4.

Niese (6-1) limited Lakewood to one run and five hits, striking out seven in the effort. Four Hagerstown players had two hits in the game, including Nick Evans, who also drove in a pair of runs.

Notes: Joe Holden doubled twice in four at-bats, scored two runs and also drove in a run. … Jonel Pacheco stole a pair of bases, giving him seven for the season.
