Letting Guerra Toe It Up

There is a sharp contrast in development philosophy between 2005 and this season. Instead of stocking the low-A team with college ball players who got their feet with the Brooklyn Cyclones the year prior, the Mets are shifting to trend of challenging their youngsters in the long-season leagues right away and letting them toe it up against older competition. Deolis Guerra is the youngest of the bunch.

"The whole plan with guys like Fernando Martinez, Hector Pellot, Deolis Guerra, Jonathan Sanchez, etc, was let's get them on the field for 120 games," Suns' Manager Frank Cacciatore told us. "Let's let those guys that have never played actually toe it up for 120-130 games. Their at-bats will take care of themselves. Let's get them ready to be in the lineup. That's what we're looking at...
