Jaime Cerda was a draft and follow signee of the Mets in May 1999. The Mets used their 23 selection in the June 1998 draft to pick Cerda. Cerda attended Fresno City College. Cerda's career was delayed until 2000 when Cerda needed "Tommy John" surgery.

Cerda has had 2 marvelous seasons in the Mets system. In a total of 127 innings pitched, Cerda has allowed only 92 hits, walked 26 hitters, and struck o ut 133 batters.
