Though the New York Daily News
reports that Mets GM Omar Minaya has been instructed to go north with the players already on the club's roster, club brass continues to monitor opportunities to upgrade its bullpen, considered the weakest part of the club.
The Mets have been rumored to have interest in Urbina, 31, for several weeks, although it is unclear exactly what Detroit would be looking for in return. One earlier report pegged the Tigers' demands as a top prospect from the Mets system.
Urbina has a 1.50 ERA in 6.0 innings this spring with Detroit, with two walks and four strikeouts. Last year, he was 4-6 with a 4.50 ERA in 54 games with the Tigers.
The Mets should get a closer look at Detroit reliever Ugueth Urbina as the Tigers roll into Port St. Lucie Thursday afternoon.
RHP Ugueth Urbina is scheduled to pitch Thursday against the Mets.
