Mets release McEwing
Joe McEwing

Scrappy utilityman Joe McEwing's run with the New York Mets came to an end Thursday, as he was released by the club.

With several capable utility infielders in camp, McEwing was facing low odds of making the club, solidified on Sunday when Chris Woodward tripled twice in a victory over the Detroit Tigers.

After that game, Mets manager Willie Randolph insinuated to reporters that he believed Woodward might make the club, and Randolph has also been impressed with Marlon Anderson's versatility and speed.

The 32-year-old McEwing has suspected his run with the Mets has been drawing to a close for some time, and the St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros have been reportedly interested in acquiring him.

The versatile McEwing played every position except catcher and pitcher during his five years with the Mets, and he was unofficially tabbed as the club's third and fourth-string catcher during the last several seasons.

He hit .254 with one home run and 16 RBI with New York last year, and notably served as a mentor to budding star David Wright.

With McEwing's release, only one player – catcher Mike Piazza – remains on the 40-man roster from the 2000 club that went to the World Series.
