Last season, Wilson batted .274 with four home runs and 21 RBI, filling in admirably when Piazza went on the disabled list with left knee inflammation for most of August.
The injury bug would catch Wilson as well, however, as the four-year Major League veteran underwent season-ending surgery on Sept. 14 to repair a tendon in his left hand.
The Mets also announced that they have non-tendered pitchers Orber Moreno and Scott Strickland, and both are now free agents. The Mets hope to re-sign both to minor league contracts.
Finally, Mookie Wilson was officially named the new manager of the Brooklyn (A) Cyclones on Tuesday, replacing Tony Tijerina. Wilson and pitching coach Steve Merriman will make the jump from Kingsport (R), while hitting coach Donovan Mitchell remains at Brooklyn.
