Cardinals prospect interview: Malik Collymore
18-year-old infielder Malik Collymore hails from Mississauga, Ontario. The land of our neighbors to the north might not be thought of as a baseball hot bed by some, but that is far from the case. Collymore was part of a very strong youth program there, including time with the Ontario Blue Jays and Team Canada. After becoming a St. Louis Cardinal due to his selection as their 10th-round selection in the 2013 draft, Collymore received $275,000 to skip the University of Missouri and sign. He was the fourth of four middle infielders taken by the Cardinals in the first 10 rounds. Collymore On the Gulf Coast League Cardinals rookie-level club, Collymore moved from his prep position at shortstop to play second base along with fellow draftee Chris Rivera and alongside second-round shortstop Oscar Mercado. The right-handed hitter batted .228 in 57 at-bats over his first professional action of 19 games. Collymore fanned 23 times and drew just three walks. With several weeks remaining in the GCL season, Collymore was excused to rejoin his Canadian national team, traveling to Australia and China to play this fall. In the International Baseball Federation 18U World Cup in Taichung, Taiwan, the 5-foot-11, 190-pounder was given the top base stealer award. Collymore then returned to Cardinals camp in Jupiter, Fla. to participate in fall instructional league. During the recently-completed instructs, Collymore spoke about playing his country along with his first summer and fall as a professional baseball player.
