Depending on whether you see the count as half-empty or half-full choosing the Scout.com Player of the Week for the week straddling the All-Star Break can be easy, or it can be as difficult as a Prince Fielder triple.
With only three games – at the most – upon which to base this week's award, we might have to get a bit inventive.
We could go with who led the majors in slugging percentage – Pittsburgh's Garrett Jones -- who slugged 1.222 over his past three games, hitting .444 with two homers, but those two longballs were both solo shots – the only two runs he drove in over the past three games, and the only two runs he himself scored.
New York Yankees center fielder Brett Gardner had an all-around productive week, with three walks, three stolen bases, a .545 average and two runs scored with two RBIs, in three games, all without tallying a single extra-base hit.
But, this week's award goes to New York Mets rookie Juan Lagares. His league-leading seven hits over the last three games are more than he had for the entire month of July before the break. Lagares has hit .700 since coming out of the break with two runs, 12 total bases, two doubles, one home run and five RBIs.
He's tied for the most homers over the past seven days, leads the majors in batting average, on-base percentage and OPS, and is second in slugging (1.200).
