Garcia's shoulder ailment returns; Boggs back

Mike Matheny and Jaime Garcia

The St. Louis Cardinals placed Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with Mitchell Boggs returning from Memphis.

A trip to Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. is never a good thing. St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia will be making that trek early next week for an examination of his ailing left shoulder. The 26-year-old has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with what is officially being called a left shoulder strain, but he would be out for much longer if surgery is required.

Garcia first encountered the problem last summer, as he spent two months on the DL and missed most of the post-season as well. Rather than go under the knife in the off-season, the rehab route was chosen.

Garcia pitched well in spring training and made six regular season starts with no issue. However, he has been bothered by an increasing amount of shoulder pain over his last three starts in the past two weeks. That culminated in his Friday night outing against Milwaukee during which he allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings.

It is not yet clear who will take Garcia's spot in the rotation, but reliever Mitchell Boggs is being recalled from Memphis to take Garcia's spot on the Cardinals' active roster.

After losing St. Louis' closer's job, Boggs, 29, was banished to Triple-A. His ERA at that time, on May 3, was 12.66 ERA over 10 2/3 innings. The right-hander has allowed three earned runs in 5 1/3 Pacific Coast League frames (5.06 ERA). Boggs fanned four and walked five. In all six Memphis outings, he came on with the bases empty, retiring four and issuing two free passes to his first batters faced.

The transaction to replace Boggs on Memphis' roster has not yet been announced.
