Hotwire: Benitez to San Francisco Close
The Bergen Record reports the Mets are on the verge of trading Armando Benitez to the San Francisco Giants for right-handed reliever Felix Rodriguez and prospects, citing a major league source. The Mets would then turn around and ship Rodriguez to the Yankees in exchange for a second set of prospects. The report states that Benitez would then become a set-up man for closer Tim Worrell, who has converted 20 of 24 save opportunities and owns a 1.57 ERA. Rodriguez, 30, is 5-0 with a 3.54 ERA in 40.2 innings this season. He has walked 17, struck out 31, and allowed 41 hits. Benitez, 30, is 2-3 this season with a 3.11 ERA and 21 saves in 27 chances. This deal is more favorable to the Mets because another option, that is "still close" to happening according to the paper, is a trade involving the Marlins, but they are reluctant to pick up the remaining amount of the $9 million he is owed. The paper stated the Mets would receive Blaine Neal back in that deal.
