Gomez Honing His Game
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 167 pounds, 20-year old Gilbert Gomez looks every bit the part of the quick and rangy young centerfielder. But behind that young exterior lies an intelligent and analytic approach to baseball that is focused on maximizing his talent in a manner Gomez believes is conducive to the current philosophies of team and player development in American professional baseball. Gomez's approach is derived from his own observations of what it takes to be successful in baseball. He said that upon examining the statistics of the top hitters in baseball, a common theme was a willingness to work the base on balls. "Great players take walks and my main goal as a hitter is to get on base," Gomez said. "And with the way baseball is evolving with all the sabermetrics you really have to be on top of the game.
