Reyes had four RBI Wednesday night, leading the Mets over the Florida Marlins by the score of 10-5. Reyes had an RBI single in the second and a bases loaded, bases-clearing triple in the fifth, which was reminiscent of his performance in the Futures Game last year, in which he was the MVP.
After Cliff Floyd struck out to start the top of the second, Jeromy Burnitz and Vance Wilson stroked base hits, setting up Jason Phillips' RBI single. Reyes' double followed, After Al Leiter struck out, Roger Cedeno hit a 2-RBI double and was plated by Ty Wigginton's single.
Cliff Floyd joined in the hit parade in the fifth, driving in Robbie Alomar. Jeromy Burnitz followed him with a double, allowing him to score easily. Reyes' tripled two batters later, and the Mets took a commanding 10-3 lead.
The night wasn't so kind to Mets pitchers, starting in the first inning. Al Leiter allowed a run on a bloop single to centerfield that was misplayed by Jeromy Burnitz. Leiter got a double-play out of Mike Lowell, but walked Juan Encarnacion and Derek Lee with two outs. Alex Gonzalez hit a single to shallow left after Jason Phillips was unable to make a play on his foul ball the pitch before, and the hit plated Mike Redmond and Encarnacion.
Leiter also allowed a two-run homerun to Alex Gonalez in the 5th. Gonzalez finished with four RBI. Leiter got the win to reach eight, but raised his ERA to a sub-par 5.06.
With the win, the Mets assured themselves of a winning road trip, taking their sixth in nine games. They play tomorrow night in Florida and then return to Shea to take on the Yankees in the first installment of the 2003 Subway Series.
