2012 Draft Scouting Report: Hoby Milner
Name: Hoby Milner Position: Pitcher School: Texas Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 165 Bats/Throws: L/L Events Scouted: Team USA Physical Description There's definitely some room for Milner to add some muscle mass as a professional. He's a legitimate 165 pounds but is built broadly and looks like he'll get significantly bigger over time. He's also a solid athlete and moves around the mound well. As far as collegiate arms go, Milner is one of the more projectable ones. Mechanics Milner has a decent feel for his delivery. He gets little loose and sloppy at times, but for the most part seems able to stay on top and repeat well. He has a good stride and once he packs on strength his lower half is going to be an even greater benefit for him. Fastball He's not going to rely on velocity, but given his rail thin frame there's probably a couple more ticks to come. Right now, Milner sits 87-90 mph with the fastball, but he does it with relatively little effort. He gets some solid two-seam action and knows how to live down in the strike zone. When he does get up in the zone, he becomes very flat and hittable. Curveball There's a lot of potential in Milner's curveball but it looks very inconsistent right now. He flashes average 11-5 bite at 74-76 mph but he tends to get around it, causing it to become a bit of a roller up in the zone. Changeup Milner's changeup is going to have to a big part of his game if he's going to get professional hitters out. It shows average potential at times at 80-83 mph, but his location is going to need to improve. His feel for it is not consistent enough at this stage. Summation Hoby Milner is not going to be an overpowering pitcher even if he does add a couple ticks. He's going to need his command of his secondary pitches to improve and he'll have to locate his fastball. If he can do that he's going to make a nice third or fourth starter in a big league rotation.
