FOX Sports/Scout.com Field Reporter Inna Lazarev checks in with New York Mets prospect Robert Carson…
AFL Scouting Report: Robert Carson
Name: Robert Carson Position: Pitcher Team: New York Mets Height: 6-foot-3 Weight: 220 Bats/Throws: L/L Events Scouted: Arizona Fall League Scouting ReportRobert Carson has all the physical ability a scout would look for in a big league starting pitcher. But, even as he enters the upper levels of the minors he's still very crude. Carson has an extra large, strong frame and it shows up in his raw velocity. He works steadily at 92-95 mph, topping out at 96 mph routinely. The velocity comes very easily and the ball jumps at hitters. It's a swing and miss offering if he can establish his secondary pitches. Carson also shows off a sharp cut fastball at 88-90 mph. This is a plus pitch when he's spotting it. His changeup and slider are far more crude. His slider sits 82-85 mph and flashes sharp action, but his command leaves a lot to be desired. And, his changeup is in the rudimentary stages of development. The differential is there, working at 80-83 mph but the feel just isn't there yet. It's all about command for Carson. If he can repeat his arm action and spot his pitches, he's an above average big league starter.
