Action continued across the winter leagues last week and featured varied performances. Which bats showed up in the Arizona Fall League? How did the pitchers fare in the AFL? Who made their debuts in the Dominican Winter League? Look inside for the answers to those questions and more.

Arizona Fall League

Kai Gronauer: 1-for-7, 2 RBI, R, 2B, 2 BB

Gronauer picked up his first hit of his AFL season, recording an RBI double on Tuesday. In seven games, Gronauer is 2-for-23 with four RBI, three walks, one double and one triple.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis: 6-for-19, 3 RBI, R, 3B, BB

Nieuwenhuis’ peripheral production has been limited, but he continues to hit his way on base including back-to-back 2-hit performances on Wednesday and Thursday. His best night came on Wednesday when he went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Overall, Nieuwenhuis is 11-for-37 (.297) with six RBI.

Josh Satin: 3-for-8, RBI, 2 R, 2B

Satin hopped on the taxi squad two weeks ago and he is making the most of his limited time. He went 1-for-4 with one run scored on Wednesday. On Saturday, Satin went 2-for-4 with an RBI, one run scored and a double. Satin is 5-for-14 in four games in the AFL.

Jordany Valdespin: 8-for-19, 3 RBI, 4 R, 3 SB

Valdespin continues to be one of the better all-around players in the AFL this season. He recorded three multi-hit games this week including an RBI in three straight games. Valdespin has one stolen in five of his last six games and is 7-for-7 in stolen base opportunities. Overall, Valdespin is hitting .339 (19-for-56) with one home run, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Nick Carr: 2 G, 3 IP, ER, 3 R, 2 H, 3 K, BB

Carr made his two performances last week. On Tuesday, he pitched one perfect inning with one strikeout. On Friday, Carr tossed two innings, gave up one earned run (three runs0 on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk. In six appearances (10 innings), Carr has allowed seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits with a 5/5 K/BB ratio.

Robert Carson: 1.2 IP, 6 ER, 5 H, K, BB, HR

Carson, who was very sharp in his first AFL appearance, was treated rudely in his second as he gave up six earned runs in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Brad Holt: 2.1 IP, 3 ER, 5 R, 3 H, 3 K, 4 BB

Holt, who was very sharp the previous week en route to Pitcher of the Week honors, endured a very rough start on Friday. Holt navigated the first two innings with one run allowed but then gave up four runs (three earned) in the third inning before he was knocked from the game. Overall, Holt is 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA and a 12/8 K/BB ratio in 11 1/3 innings (four starts).

Eric Niesen: 2 G, 2.1 IP, ER, 3 R, 7 H, 3 K, BB

Niesen was touched up in his first outing of the week on Tuesday when he gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. He rebounded on Friday when he gave up two hits in 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Niesen has allowed eight runs (four earned) on 14 hits in 6 1/3 innings this fall.

Dominican Winter League

Daniel Murphy: 5-for-20, 3 RBI, 3 2B, 3 BB, 2 SB

Murphy has so far had a quiet performance in the DWL, but his week was highlighted by this three-double, two-RBI performance last Sunday. He recorded an RBI single on Tuesday and knocked another single on Saturday. In eight games, Murphy is 5-for-28.

Francisco Pena: 1-for-11, 2 BB, SB

Pena made his debut for Aguilas Cibaenas with a 1-for-11 performance over five games.

Jeurys Familia: 1 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 2 K, BB, HR

Familia made his winter ball debut and was rudely greeted with a two-run home run in one inning of relief work. Elvin Ramirez: 3 G, 4.1 IP, ER, 2 H, 4 K

Ramirez, who has worked his way back from shoulder issues the last couple of seasons, made his winter league debut with 4 1/3 solid innings.

Armando Rodriguez: DNP

Puerto Rico Winter League

Jesus Feliciano: 4-for-15, 2 RBI, 6 BB, SB

Feliciano made his winter ball debut this week and is picking up where he left off in the regular season as far as getting himself on base. He went 2-for-4 on Thursday after going 1-for-2 with two walks on Sunday followed by a 1-for-3 night with two walks on Tuesday.

Brahiam Maldonado: 2-for-9, 2 RBI, R, 2B, 2 BB

Maldonado started his week with a 2-for-4 performance with a double and one walk. He went 0-for-5 the rest of the week with a run scored on Wednesday.

Hector Pellot: 2-for-6, 2 RBI, 2B, BB

Pellot, who saw only limited time in the 2010 regular season, made his PWL debut this week. He went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI on Tuesday. He followed that with an 0-for-3 night on Wednesday.

Jose De La Torre: 0.2 IP, K

De La Torre made his second appearance of the winter league season, pitching a perfect two-third of an inning with one strikeout. He has given up just one hit and walked one with four strikeouts 2 2/3 innings this fall.

Venezuelan Winter League

Eric Campbell: 1-for-16, BB

Campbell has hit a cold streak in the PWL. After starting the fall season 12-for-33, Campbell’s bat fell silent last week. Overall, he is still hitting .265 (13-for-49) with three RBI, six runs and five doubles.

Wilmer Flores: DNP

Flores has yet to return to action after suffering a calf strain two weeks ago.

Manuel Alvarez: 6 G, 11 IP, 2 ER, 3 R, 11 H, 9 K, 3 BB

Alvarez didn’t pitch six games last week, but he was left out of last week’s review so it was definitely worth noting Alvarez’s strong winter ball performance so far.
