Winter Leagues Week In Review

Winter ball action began last week, including those who headed to the Puerto Rico Winter League. Now with prospects in four winter leagues, there is more to catch up across the winter leagues. How did Robert Carson fare in his AFL debut? Did Brad Holt's strong start continue? Look inside for the answers to those questions and more.

Arizona Fall League

Kirk Nieuwenhuis: 1-for-6, 4 K

Nieuwenhuis dealt with aches and pains this week and was limited to just six at-bats over two games. He went 1-for-4 on Monday followed by a 0-for-2 effort on Saturday night. Overall, Nieuwenhuis is hitting .278 (5-for-18) with three RBI in six games.

Josh Satin: 2-for-6, 2 BB, 3 K

Satin joined the Mesa Solar Sox taxi squad this week. He went 2-for-2 with two singles and two walks in his first game on Wednesday. On Saturday, the second of two days he'll play as part of the taxi squad, Satin went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Jordany Valdespin: 5-for-19, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R, 2B, BB, 2 SB

Valdespin continues to have a strong showing in the AFL. He registered a hit in four of five games last week, scoring a run in three of them. He went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored on Tuesday and hit a solo home run on Thursday. Overall, Valdespin is hitting .297 (11-for-37) with one home run, seven RBI and two doubles.

Kai Gronauer: 1-for-9, 2 RBI, 3B

Gronauer recorded his first hit of his Arizona Fall League season which was an RBI triple. Gronauer also recorded a sacrifice fly. Gronauer is just 1-for-16 in five games so far.

Nick Carr: 2 G, 3 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 0 K, 3 BB

Carr received his two outings this week, but both were equally tough. On Tuesday, Carr gave up two earned runs on two hits and three walks in one inning of work. On Friday, Carr was tagged for two runs on four hits in two innings. He has allowed four earned runs in seven innings of work this fall.

Robert Carson: Win, 3 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 K

Robert Carson got his first taste of the AFL when he took the ball to start Thursday night's action. Carson responded in kind by giving up three hits, striking out two and walking none. The Mets sent Carson to the AFL hoping for a good showing. So far, so good for the left-hander.

Brad Holt: 2 GS, 6 IP, 0 ER, 1 R, 3 H, 8 K, 3 BB

Holt was sent to Arizona to turn his season around. So far, Holt is doing that. He gave up an unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks. He was even sharper on Saturday night when he gave up one hit and struck out five in three innings. Overall, Holt has allowed just one unearned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and four walks in nine innings.

Eric Niesen: 2 G, 2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 2 BB

Niesen made his third and fourth appearances of the AFL season. On Monday, Niesen allowed one hit and one walk with one strikeout in an inning of work. He took the ball again on Friday and gave up two earned runs on three hits in one inning of work.

Dominican Winter League

Daniel Murphy: 0-for-8

Murphy headed to the DWL after Instructs to play for Aguilas Cibaenas. Murphy is still working his way back from a midseason knee injury. He made his debut on Friday and went 0-for-8 over his first two games. Murphy is currently playing second base.

Armando Rodriguez: G, 1 IP, K

Rodriguez made his debut for Leones de Escogido in the DWL. Rodriguez will likely stay in a relief role. He made his debut on Saturday, pitching one perfect inning with a strikeout.

Puerto Rico Winter League

Jose De La Torre: G, 2 IP, H, 3 K, BB

De La Torre is pitching for Criollos de Caguas. De La Torre went a combined 3-2 with a 2.96 ERA, 80 strikeouts , 34 walks and a .206 opponent's average in 70 1/3 innings split between Binghamton and Buffalo

Brahiam Maldonado: 2-for-7, 2 R, BB, SB

Maldonado made his winter ball debut on Friday. He went 1-for-4 in that game followed by a 1-for-3 effort with two runs scored, one walk and a stolen base.

Venezuelan Winter League

Wilmer Flores: Did Not Play

A calf strain has sent Flores back to the States for further examination and rehab. There appears to be an effort to make sure he is absolutely 100 percent before he sent back to the roster.

Eric Campbell: 3-for-9, 2 2B, 2 BB

Campbell hasn't driven in a run in his last 17 at-bats, but Campbell is maintaining a strong average after a 3-for-9 week. Overall, Campbell is hitting .364 (12-for-33) with three RBI, six runs and five doubles in nine games.
